Minimally Invasive Surgery

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery uses advanced tools and innovative techniques that allow surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions.

Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery causes less damage to the body, which reduces recovery time and post-surgical pain.

Dr. Masterson is an experienced OB/GYN who specializes in minimally invasive surgery. She uses the less invasive surgical technique to perform many common gynecological procedures.

When is minimally invasive surgery performed?

Dr. Masterson takes a conservative and evidence-based approach to care. However, when conservative methods fail to alleviate your gynecological problem, she may recommend surgical intervention.

She performs minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of:

  • Pelvic disorders
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Fibroids
  • Hysterectomy

Though Dr. Masterson prefers a less invasive approach when performing surgery, in some cases, she may recommend a traditional open surgery.

When it comes to surgery, she wants to make sure you get the best possible outcomes and uses the techniques best suited to meet your surgical and medical needs.

What happens during minimally invasive surgery?

Dr. Masterson develops individualized, minimally invasive surgery plans based on your diagnosis and medical history, often using laparoscopic methods.

During your procedure, Dr. Masterson first makes a small incision in your abdomen to insert a laparoscope, which is a thin, flexible lighted camera.

She then makes additional incisions to insert small surgical tools and performs the necessary procedure using the images provided by the laparoscope as a guide.

After your minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Masterson sends you to the recovery area for monitoring. You may go home the same day or she may admit you to the hospital for continued monitoring during the initial stage of your recovery.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?

Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgical techniques offer many benefits. These benefits include:

  • Smaller scars
  • Less post-surgical pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Less blood loss

Minimally invasive surgery is also generally less risky than traditional open surgery.
